 OUR AIMS

Music on the Move was set up at the end of 2005 by a group of dedicated people who believe that music should be valued for its potential to build links bewteen communities and cultures both locally and globally, opening the way for greater understanding and tolerance. It should also be valued for its ability to communicate to young and old, regardless of background or race, to inform, stir emotions, bring joy and transform lives.  Research has shown that music also has healing qualities.  We are therefore committed in our belief that everyone should have the right to a broad range of musical opportunities and experiences.

WHAT WE DO

Workshops

With the help of funding from Eurpoean/Welsh Assembly Funds, The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Michael Sorbel Foundation, The Laura Ashley Foundation, Wales Arts International and Wales Night Out Scheme, we haved introduced many people, with a particular emphasis on the young, to new musical experiences through our workshops, performances and projects.

Though our workshops we have provided young people with the opportunity for hands on creative musical experiences.  We have carried out these workshops in rural isolated communities in Wales where there is a disitnct lack of cultural diversity, resources and opportunities.

We have introduced the Kora (West African Harp Lute), Djembe (West African Drum), World Percussion,  Samba Drumming and percussion (Afro-Brazilian),  Harmony Singing from around the world,  Beat-Box and Rapping and African and Hip-Hop Dance.  For more information on our workshops click here    .

Events/Performances

With the help of the Welsh 'Night Out Scheme' we hope to continue organising evening performances following the success of our African Music Night in Manorbier, Pembrokeshire. For more information click here

Projects

Through our projects we aim to build strong beneficial links between individuals, communities and cultures.

At the beiginning of 2007 we organised a project for our Singing tutor to collaborate with musicians in Senegal.   For more information  click here .

We are also exploring the possiblities of organising musical/educational visits to the Gambia for people who have attended our workshops.

Projects like these help to establish beneficial links between individuals, communities and cultures.

SPECIALITY

We have a particular interest in the music from West Africa, because of the important infulence this music has had on  the world.   It is now widely accepted that many elements of popular music today. i.e, jazz. funk, soul, hip-hop, r & b, blues, rock, etc had its roots in the music from West Africa.  In West Africa today the variety and quality of music is inspiring and its influence around the world continues.

OUR FUTURE

With ongoing successful funding we can continue to provide our services to communities in Wales.  Due to the geography and lack of funding in many of these communities,  we rely heavily on outside financial support.  We aim, where possible, to offer free or very reduced fees for our workshops enabling those on low income to attend.  We welcome any support for our work.

Please contact us if you are interested in any aspect of our work or would like us to provide workshops in your community.  We are very happy to discuss project ideas.
